Advancing Hydrogen Technologies in Shipping Industry: ABS and Pusan National University Collaboration
Key Ideas
  • ABS and Pusan National University are collaborating to develop liquid hydrogen carriers and hydrogen propulsion systems.
  • The partnership aims to leverage expertise to overcome technical challenges in transporting liquefied hydrogen.
  • The Hydrogen Ship Technology Center focuses on the commercialization of liquid hydrogen carriers as part of a key industry initiative.
  • ABS has granted an approval in principle for an innovative cargo handling system for ethane carriers, enhancing operational efficiency.
The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Pusan National University have signed a memorandum of understanding to advance hydrogen technologies within the shipping industry. The collaboration will concentrate on developing liquid hydrogen carriers and cryogenic engineering, with a focus on overcoming the challenges of storing liquefied hydrogen at -253°C. ABS and Pusan National University aim to pool their technical expertise to facilitate the creation of liquid hydrogen carriers and propulsion systems for the maritime sector. This effort is aligned with the K-Shipbuilding Super Gap Vision 2040 initiative by the South Korean government. The Hydrogen Ship Technology Center at Pusan National University leads the project for the commercialization of liquid hydrogen carriers, aiming to contribute to the future hydrogen economy. The partnership between ABS and the university is seen as a crucial step towards utilizing liquid hydrogen in shipping. Additionally, ABS has given approval in principle to HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering for an innovative cargo handling system designed for very large ethane carriers. This system, combining reliquefaction and fuel supply processes, is expected to reduce operational costs for clients. Overall, the collaboration and technological advancements in hydrogen indicate a positive outlook for the future of hydrogen applications in the shipping industry.
