The second ship in a new series for Viking, Viking Vesta, was recently delivered by Fincantieri at the Ancona shipyard. With a gross tonnage of approximately 54,300 tons, the vessel features 499 cabins and has the capacity to accommodate 998 passengers, positioning it within the small cruise ship segment. This delivery marks the 14th ship provided by Fincantieri to Viking, a partnership that has flourished since 2012. The collaboration between the two companies has resulted in a solid portfolio of 28 units, further solidified by recent agreements and contract signings. Notably, Fincantieri and Viking have announced the development of the world's first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, the Viking Libra. This innovative vessel, currently under construction in Ancona, will utilize hydrogen for both propulsion and on-board electricity generation, ensuring zero emissions during operation. The environmentally friendly design will enable the ship to access even the most eco-sensitive areas, setting a new standard for sustainable cruising. Additionally, the sister ship, Viking Astrea, also under construction at the Ancona shipyard for delivery in 2027, will incorporate the same cutting-edge hydrogen technology. The unveiling of these hydrogen-powered vessels signifies a positive step towards greener practices in the cruise industry, demonstrating a commitment to reducing the environmental impact of maritime travel.
