GONDAN Shipbuilders has recently handed over the Austri Enabler, a state-of-the-art Commissioning Service Operations Vessel (CSOV), to Edda Wind, a Norwegian shipowner. Designed by Salt Ship Design in Norway, the Austri Enabler is a part of a new wave of vessels revolutionizing the offshore wind energy sector. This vessel, the fourth in a series of sister ships, is equipped with cutting-edge technology to optimize operations in offshore wind farms, specifically during the commissioning and maintenance of wind turbines at sea. With dimensions of 88 meters in length and 19.7 meters in beam, the Austri Enabler can accommodate up to 120 individuals, consisting of technicians and crew members. Its technology includes an array of features such as a 3D-compensated offshore crane, an active gangway reaching 30 meters, an integrated elevator for 26 passengers, and a helipad with a diameter of 21 meters. Notably, the vessel's propulsion system employs cycloidal propellers driven by permanent magnet motors and is designed to be liquid hydrogen carrier (LOHC)-ready, setting the stage for fully emission-free operations. The Austri Enabler has secured a 12-month operational contract, with plans to commence activities off the coast of the U.K. in the third quarter of 2025. While Edda Wind has not disclosed additional specifics about the contract, the vessel's role is pivotal in supporting offshore wind farms efficiently and sustainably. This innovative vessel represents a significant step towards environmentally conscious maritime practices and underscores the industry's commitment to renewable energy sources.
