MOL's Wind Hunter Project Selected for Japan's Hydrogen Society Initiative
Key Ideas
  • Mitsui O.S.K. Lines' Wind Hunter Project chosen by NEDO for hydrogen initiative in Japan to produce hydrogen using offshore wind energy.
  • Successful onshore supply of green hydrogen in March 2025 through demonstrations using the yacht Winz Maru.
  • Plans include optimizing hydrogen production vessels, studying wind conditions for energy production, and establishing hydrogen supply chains.
  • MOL aims to commercialize a demonstration vessel by the 2030s, showcasing a model at Expo 2025 in Osaka.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. announced that its Wind Hunter Project has been selected by Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) for the 'Development of Technologies for Realizing a Hydrogen Society / Regional Hydrogen Utilization Technology Development' initiative. The project, which began in November 2020, focuses on producing hydrogen onboard vessels using offshore wind energy and supplying it to the onshore market. In a significant milestone, MOL successfully conducted demonstrations with the yacht Winz Maru, achieving the first onshore supply of green hydrogen produced at sea in March 2025. Under the NEDO project, MOL will work on optimizing hydrogen production vessels, studying optimal wind conditions for green hydrogen energy production, building a demonstration vessel for the Wind Hunter project, and investigating hydrogen supply chains. With the goal of establishing a hydrogen value chain in Japan, MOL aims to have a commercial demonstration vessel in operation as early as the 2030s. Furthermore, a model of the Wind Hunter is on display at Expo 2025 Osaka, showcasing the project's innovative approach to transportation and mobility within a future city.
