India's Milestone: First Hydrogen Fuel Buses at Himalayan Heights
Key Ideas
- NTPC provided five hydrogen fuel cell buses to SIDCO for operation in Leh, marking India's first commercial deployment of such buses at high altitudes.
- The buses operate in sub-zero temperatures using hydrogen dispensed at 350 bar, contributing to around 350 MT/year carbon emissions reduction and 230 MT/year oxygen production.
- The hydrogen fueling station in Leh is co-located with a solar plant, showcasing a sustainable model for green mobility and providing renewable power for operational needs.
- This initiative by NTPC sets a global benchmark for operating hydrogen vehicles in challenging altitude conditions, emphasizing the company's commitment to green energy initiatives.
NTPC, a prominent power utility company in India, has handed over five Hydrogen fuel cell buses to SIDCO in Leh, marking a significant milestone in India's green mobility sector. The deployment of these buses at high altitudes in Leh showcases India's first commercial utilization of hydrogen fuel buses and sets a global standard for sustainable transportation solutions. The buses are specially designed to operate in sub-zero temperatures and rarefied atmospheres typical of high altitude regions. Operating at an altitude of 11,562 ft, these buses are fueled by hydrogen dispensed at a high pressure of 350 bar, making it India's first high-pressure hydrogen dispensation system. The project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 350 metric tons per year and contribute 230 metric tons per year of oxygen to the atmosphere, equivalent to planting 13000 trees annually. The hydrogen fueling station in Leh, established by NTPC, is complemented by a dedicated 1.7 MW solar plant, ensuring renewable power for the station's operations. NTPC's initiative not only promotes sustainable public transportation but also highlights the company's commitment to green energy and environmental conservation. This innovative project serves as a model for operating hydrogen vehicles in challenging environmental conditions, emphasizing the importance of transitioning towards eco-friendly transportation solutions.
