Motor Oil Pioneers Hydrogen in Greece with First Public Refuelling Station
Key Ideas
- Motor Oil opens Greece's inaugural public hydrogen refuelling station near its refinery, backed by EU funding.
- The project, in collaboration with Wien Energie and Coral Gas, supports both light and heavy-duty vehicles.
- Future plans involve self-produced hydrogen, expansion to more stations, and powering the company's operations.
- Greece is also advancing in hydrogen adoption with plans for hydrogen-powered public transport through the TRIERES initiative.
Motor Oil has recently launched Greece’s primary public hydrogen refuelling station, located near its refinery in Agioi Theodoroi. This initiative, supported by the EU's Connecting Europe Facility, marks a €3 million investment that caters to both light and heavy-duty vehicles. Initially, green hydrogen is sourced from Austria's Wien Energie and distributed by Coral Gas, with future intentions to transition to self-produced hydrogen from their upcoming facility. The station's construction was executed by BFS, a subsidiary of Motor Oil. The company also has plans for additional stations in Akrata and Thriasio, with funding already secured. Moreover, hydrogen will play a crucial role in powering Motor Oil's refinery and lubricants segment, LPC. The broader hydrogen push in Greece includes the TRIERES program, set to introduce hydrogen-based public transportation. OSY, the transit agency in Athens, is gearing up to trial hydrogen buses, with a substantial order of 400 new buses, including 50 hydrogen-powered units. Despite these advancements, regulatory challenges persist, with the absence of a framework for registering hydrogen vehicles leading to trial runs utilizing foreign plates. Georgios Hatzimarkakis, CEO of Hydrogen Europe, envisions up to 20 hydrogen stations in Greece and a total of 380 across Europe. He anticipates a decline in hydrogen prices from approximately €15/kg as surplus renewable energy becomes more prevalent in the sector.
