Key Ideas
  • New Flyer introduces optional hydrogen four-tank-module for Xcelsior CHARGE FC bus, increasing onboard fuel capacity by 17.5 kilograms.
  • Partnership with Humboldt Transit Authority in California showcases success on challenging routes with the extended range feature.
  • Four additional tanks complement standard five tanks, offering 50% more fuel capacity and up to 120 miles of extended range for the Xcelsior CHARGE FC bus.
  • Enhanced range capability enables efficient coverage of longer routes, reduces refueling frequency, and optimizes transit agency operations.
New Flyer of America Inc. has revealed a significant innovation for its Xcelsior CHARGE FC 40-foot hydrogen fuel cell-electric bus (FCEB). The new optional hydrogen four-tank-module boosts the vehicle's fuel capacity by adding 17.5 kilograms of onboard fuel. This enhancement, made in collaboration with Humboldt Transit Authority in northern California, has proven successful on challenging routes, particularly those with steep terrains. The additional four tanks, mounted transversely, supplement the bus's standard five hydrogen tanks, increasing its fuel capacity by 50% and extending its range by up to 120 miles. By offering the Xcelsior CHARGE FC bus the capability to cover longer distances and handle more demanding duty cycles efficiently, the new feature reduces the need for frequent refueling, ultimately helping transit agencies streamline their operations.
