SamTrans Approves Contract for Hydrogen Fueling Station Expansion
Key Ideas
  • SamTrans Board of Directors approved contracts with Trillium USA Company, LLC to develop a permanent hydrogen fueling station in South San Francisco.
  • The station will support SamTrans' transition to zero-emission vehicles, specifically hydrogen fuel cell-electric buses, replacing diesel vehicles for cleaner air and a healthier community.
  • The Innovative Clean Transit Plan aims to replace diesel buses with zero-emission options, with 115 hydrogen fuel cell-electric buses planned for deployment.
  • The new station, with a budget of $17.4 million, will have sufficient capacity to fuel the growing FCEB fleet, ensuring reliable service and environmentally friendly transportation.
The San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans) Board of Directors has given the green light for the development of a permanent hydrogen fueling station at the agency's North Base Facility in South San Francisco. This initiative is part of SamTrans' zero-emissions transition plan and aims to support the growing fleet of hydrogen fuel cell-electric buses (FCEBs) that are replacing diesel vehicles. The board sees this move as a positive step towards cleaner air and healthier communities. SamTrans' strategy, outlined in the Innovative Clean Transit Plan, focuses on gradually replacing diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles with zero-emission alternatives, with a particular emphasis on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The current interim hydrogen fueling setup is insufficient for the planned influx of FCEBs, necessitating the construction of a new station. Trillium USA Company, LLC has been awarded a contract worth $17.4 million for the design, construction, and commissioning of the fueling facility, with an additional $2.97 million allocated for maintenance over five years. The selected contractor was chosen through a rigorous evaluation process. Design work is set to commence soon, with the station expected to be operational by early summer of 2027.
