The Central Midlands Regional Transit Authority (The COMET) in the Midlands region has introduced new zero-emission buses into its passenger service, marking a significant milestone in sustainable transit. These new buses, which include two battery-electric and two hydrogen fuel cell buses, were made possible by a $2.9 million grant awarded by the Federal Transit Administration. The deployment of these cutting-edge vehicles is part of The COMET's commitment to cleaner air, innovative transit solutions, and regional growth. The battery-electric buses, known as Xcelsior CHARGE NG™, can travel up to 254 miles per charge and feature fast-charging capability, making them suitable for urban and high-frequency service routes. On the other hand, the hydrogen fuel cell buses, Xcelsior CHARGE FC™, can travel up to 370 miles on a single refill and produce only water vapor as a byproduct, offering emission-free transportation. These buses are estimated to eliminate up to 540 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually compared to diesel buses.
