Northern Ireland's Wrightbus has handed over the first five out of 28 hydrogen-powered buses to Saarbahn, a German transport operator. This delivery marks the beginning of a €24 million project aimed at reducing CO₂ emissions. The buses, known as Kite Hydroliners, are set to enter passenger service this summer and are expected to save around 2,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually compared to diesel alternatives. The project, co-funded by Germany's Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, includes €11.1 million in federal support and involves the construction of a new hydrogen filling station at the Saarbahn depot. The CEO of Wrightbus, Jean-Marc Gales, expressed excitement about the initiative and highlighted the positive impact it will have on the environment. The Managing Director of Saarbahn, Karsten Nagel, praised the new fleet for their operational suitability, emphasizing their long range and short refueling times. Wrightbus has also established a European service center in Brühl, Germany, under the AllServiceOne brand, to offer maintenance and servicing for buses from all manufacturers. The Kite Hydroliner buses, with a range of up to 1,000 kilometers and quick refueling times, are positioned as a sustainable solution for various transport needs. With the growing demand for zero-emission transport in Europe, Wrightbus's expansion and delivery of hydrogen buses to Saarbahn showcase the company's commitment to clean transport solutions.
