Eskom, the major electricity provider in South Africa, has initiated an invitation to tender for the construction of a pilot green hydrogen plant at its research and testing facility in Johannesburg. The purpose of this pilot project, according to Eskom, is to directly contribute to the utility's decarbonisation strategy and potentially support the deployment of renewable energy solutions. By venturing into green hydrogen production, Eskom aims to explore a medium to long-term energy storage solution that aligns with its commitment to reduce carbon emissions and embrace sustainable energy practices. The company's CEO, Dan Marokane, emphasized the importance of this pilot facility in understanding the value chain of hydrogen and preparing Eskom to play a leading role in the energy transition responsibly. Green hydrogen, produced using renewable energy sources through electrolysis, offers an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional hydrogen production methods by eliminating carbon emissions. This initiative by Eskom also includes plans to accelerate the establishment of a separate renewable energy business and deploy 2GW of clean energy projects by 2026.
