Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe of South Africa believes the country has a tremendous opportunity to lead in hydrogen and fuel cell production. With nearly 80% of the world's platinum reserves, South Africa is in a prime position to capitalize on the increasing demand for platinum metals driven by the global transition to cleaner energy sources. The government plans to establish a platinum valley project and conduct a hydrogen valley feasibility study to leverage this opportunity. By supporting the conversion of truck diesel engines into hydrogen-powered vehicles, the country aims to boost economic growth, job creation, and the development of circular industries while reducing its carbon footprint. The industrial corridor project, starting in Limpopo and extending through the Johannesburg-to-Durban corridor, is set to be a pioneer in utilizing platinum metals as a green energy source. Minister Mantashe emphasized the need for bold leadership from both the government and the private sector to realize the full potential of South Africa's position in the hydrogen and fuel cell production landscape.
