Türkiye's Ambitious Goal: 120,000 Megawatts of Renewable Energy by 2035
Key Ideas
- Türkiye aims to increase its renewable energy capacity to 120,000 megawatts by 2035, leveraging its rich solar and wind resources.
- The country has made significant progress in renewable energy with a focus on better utilization of domestic resources and reducing energy imports.
- Green hydrogen is seen as a key component to further enhance Türkiye's energy sector and make a significant economic contribution.
- The planned investment of around $80 billion for achieving the renewable energy goal is expected to have a strong positive impact on the economy.
Yusuf Gunay, President of the Green Hydrogen Producers Association in Türkiye, highlighted the country's ambitious target of reaching an installed renewable energy capacity of 120,000 megawatts by 2035. Gunay emphasized the abundance of high-efficiency solar and wind resources in Türkiye and the importance of utilizing them effectively. He credited the establishment of the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) for promoting the use of domestic energy sources. Gunay pointed out that renewable energy plays a crucial role in reducing Türkiye's current account deficit, where the country ranks 5th in Europe and 11th globally in renewable capacity. He emphasized the need to capitalize on the momentum in renewable energy and focus on green hydrogen as a key technology. Türkiye's solar and wind capacity was highlighted as more efficient than that of many European countries, with 40 percent of electricity already coming from renewable sources. The planned investment of approximately $80 billion for achieving the 120,000 megawatts target is expected to not only boost energy security but also make a substantial positive impact on the economy.
