India's Landmark Green Ammonia Deal Revolutionizes Fertilizer Industry
Key Ideas
  • India's SECI issues a tender for 724,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, involving 13 fertiliser plants under the SIGHT Scheme.
  • The initiative aims to reduce dependence on imported natural gas for ammonia production and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.
  • SECI will anchor demand aggregation, sign long-term offtake agreements, and provide market certainty over a 10-year contract period.
  • The project supports India's vision of Viksit Bharat - a developed, sustainable, and self-reliant nation.
India's Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI) has made a significant move by issuing a tender for the production and supply of 724,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually. This initiative, part of the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Scheme, involves 13 fertiliser plants. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy highlighted that this step aims to address the high dependency on imported natural gas for ammonia production in India, which currently consumes around 17-19 million tonnes of ammonia yearly. By leveraging green ammonia production, the country intends to reduce its carbon footprint and work towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. SECI's involvement in demand aggregation and signing long-term contracts will provide stability to producers over a 10-year period. This development aligns with India's vision of Viksit Bharat, emphasizing sustainability and self-reliance. The project not only marks a shift towards greener practices in the fertilizer industry but also contributes to India's overall energy transition strategy.
