Nordic Baltic Hydrogen Corridor Project Receives EU Funding for Sustainable Energy Future
Key Ideas
- The Nordic Baltic Hydrogen Corridor project secured a €6.8 million grant from the EU, fostering a sustainable energy future in the Baltic Sea region.
- The initiative aims to develop clean hydrogen markets and establish a large-scale hydrogen pipeline network, contributing to Europe's hydrogen backbone.
- The project, led by key stakeholders from several countries, will enhance energy security, promote a connected European market, and support clean energy production.
- Feasibility studies funded by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) are expected to be completed by 2027, with commissioning of the project anticipated around 2033.
The Nordic Baltic Hydrogen Corridor project, which involves Gasgrid Vetyverkot Oy, Elering, Conexus Baltic Grid, Amber Grid, GAZ-SYSTEM, ONTRAS Gastransport, and the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), signed a grant agreement on 1 July 2025 to receive financial support from the EU. The project aims to develop clean hydrogen markets in the Baltic Sea region and integrate them into Europe's energy landscape. With a grant of €6.8 million, the initiative will conduct feasibility studies addressing technical, economic, regulatory, and environmental considerations for a large-scale hydrogen pipeline network. The project aligns with the vision of the European hydrogen backbone, enhancing energy security and supporting the transition to a decarbonised economy. Nemunas Biknius from Amber Grid highlighted the importance of establishing a robust hydrogen infrastructure for energy security and clean energy production. The feasibility study phase is expected to be completed by 2027, paving the way for the subsequent project development phases with a target commissioning year of 2033. The project emphasizes stakeholder involvement to ensure alignment with local needs, environmental standards, and strategic objectives.
