Sarawak, Malaysia, is actively working towards establishing a sustainable hydrogen economy by finalizing regulations and guidelines for the state's hydrogen industry by the end of the year. The state's Premier, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, highlighted the importance of regulatory clarity in ensuring a safe, structured, and sustainable development of the hydrogen economy. Sarawak passed the Distribution of Gas (Amendment) Ordinance in 2024, dedicated to regulating hydrogen-related activities, including the development, generation, distribution, and use of hydrogen. The ordinance, effective from March 1, 2025, empowers the government to oversee hydrogen activities, impose penalties, and regulate rates and charges. The state's Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability is entrusted with overseeing the ordinance's implementation. Additionally, Sarawak launched the state Hydrogen Hub and is progressing well with flagship projects like H2ornbill and H2biscus, expected to complete their Front-End Engineering Design by year-end. Plans for another hydrogen hub in Kuching are also in place to strengthen Sarawak's position in Southeast Asia's hydrogen economy.
