Uzbekistan Collaborates with Mitsubishi for Power Plant Upgrade Study
Key Ideas
  • The Ministry of Energy in Uzbekistan partners with Mitsubishi for a two-year study on upgrading existing power plants and introducing new gas turbine combined cycle plants with hydrogen co-firing.
  • Uzbekistan aims to achieve over 54% renewable energy generation by 2030 as part of its plan for introducing renewable power.
  • The study will also focus on capacity planning with the latest technologies to support the integration of renewables and promote further decarbonisation.
  • Financial support from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan will assist in the evaluation of the current plan and implementation of necessary countermeasures.
The Ministry of Energy in Uzbekistan has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) to conduct a joint study regarding a power development plan. This collaboration includes the evaluation of upgrades for existing power plants, as well as the assessment of new gas turbine combined cycle plants with a focus on hydrogen co-firing. The study will also involve determining necessary modifications and capacity planning utilizing the latest technologies. The program, set to span two years, will receive financial support from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan. The government of Uzbekistan recently released its strategy for incorporating renewable power into the energy mix by 2030, targeting a renewable energy generation share of more than 54% by that year. In line with this goal, the partnership with Mitsubishi will explore ways to supplement the introduction of renewables and advance decarbonisation, including the adaptation of the current gas turbine fleet. The collaboration will extend to evaluating the current energy plan and proposing essential countermeasures to enhance the integration of renewable sources. This encompasses the introduction of new systems and adjustments to existing infrastructure to facilitate the transition towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly energy landscape.
