Uzbekistan's Green Hydrogen Initiative Set to Transform Energy Landscape
Key Ideas
  • Uzbekistan plans to start green hydrogen production in June 2025, with an annual capacity of 3,000 tonnes, aiming to enhance its global presence in the green hydrogen market.
  • ACWA Power, in collaboration with Uzbekistan, is executing two green hydrogen projects; the initiative follows the inauguration of a pilot facility in Tashkent Region.
  • The green hydrogen project's second phase includes a facility in Chirchik for ammonia production and the construction of a wind power plant, with a significant investment of US$88 million.
  • The project showcases Uzbekistan's commitment to sustainable practices and renewable energy, establishing a solid foundation for the country's energy transition and environmental initiatives.
Uzbekistan is gearing up to pioneer green hydrogen production by launching operations in June 2025. ACWA Power's President for Central Asia, Abid Malik, revealed plans at the Tashkent International Investment Forum. The country's initiative includes two green hydrogen projects, with one specifically targeting Uzbekistan. With an annual output capacity of 3,000 tonnes of green hydrogen, this venture is poised to position Uzbekistan prominently in the global green hydrogen arena. The project's roots trace back to President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's commencement of a pilot green hydrogen facility in Tashkent Region in November 2023, in partnership with ACWA Power. The two-phase project, valued at US$88 million, aims to produce an annual 3,000 tonnes of green hydrogen by 2025. Additionally, phase two involves setting up an ammonia production facility in Chirchik capable of yielding up to 500,000 tonnes yearly via green hydrogen. This phase also includes the construction of a substantial 2.4 gigawatt wind power plant. Uzbekistan's green hydrogen endeavor signifies its dedication to sustainable energy practices and aligns with its commitment to renewable energy sources. This ambitious project not only marks a significant step in the country's energy transition but also showcases its environmental stewardship and global cooperation in the renewable energy sector.
