Plug Power has made significant strides in Europe's hydrogen economy by initiating deliveries of renewable hydrogen to the H2CAST Etzel project in Germany. This project, led by Gasunie and STORAG ETZEL, involves repurposing salt caverns in Lower Saxony for large-scale underground storage of renewable hydrogen. Plug is supplying approximately 45 metric tons of hydrogen produced through electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources, with deliveries scheduled between April and August 2025. The hydrogen deliveries support Germany's clean energy transition by minimizing carbon intensity during peak renewable energy supply hours. Additionally, the project aims to prove the viability of salt caverns as safe and flexible hydrogen storage solutions for Europe's future energy system. Once completed, the H2CAST project is expected to provide valuable insights into hydrogen storage, quality treatment, and performance for industrial-scale deployment. The collaborative effort between Plug Power and Gasunie demonstrates a commitment to advancing Europe's energy security and decarbonization goals through innovative hydrogen infrastructure projects.
