European Commission Advances Clean Hydrogen Corridor Project with H2med Consortium CEOs
Key Ideas
  • The European Commission, led by Teresa Ribera, met with CEOs of the H2med consortium to discuss progress on the clean hydrogen corridor project aimed at meeting EU decarbonisation targets.
  • CEOs emphasized the importance of supportive policies, ambitious hydrogen targets, and regulatory visibility for timely investment decisions, in alignment with the Alicante agreement.
  • Key milestones were achieved with the signing of Grant Agreements for the BarMar and CelZa PCI projects, enabling funding for engineering studies and infrastructure development under the CEF for Energy.
  • European funding, representing 100% of the requested CEF funds and 50% of the current investment phase, will facilitate infrastructure engineering, environmental impact studies, and permitting for H2med projects.
The Executive Vice-President for a Clean, Just and Competitive Transition at the European Commission, Teresa Ribera, engaged in discussions with the CEOs of the H2med consortium to assess the progress of the H2med clean hydrogen corridor project. The project aims to contribute to meeting EU targets for decarbonisation and covering 10% of European hydrogen consumption by 2030. The consortium CEOs highlighted the necessity of maintaining supportive policies, setting ambitious hydrogen targets, and ensuring regulatory clarity to facilitate timely investment decisions, as per the Alicante agreement. A significant advancement for H2med was the signing of Grant Agreements for the BarMar and CelZa PCI projects, backed by European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) funding through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for Energy. This funding will support engineering studies, infrastructure development, and environmental impact assessments. The European funding represents a substantial portion of the total funds approved by CINEA for hydrogen projects. This milestone signifies progress in the project's development, complemented by the establishment of the H2med Alliance to integrate partners across the hydrogen corridor. The H2med initiative was initially introduced by the governments of Portugal, Spain, and France, gaining support from the European Commission and later from Germany. The project's evolution includes endorsements from industry stakeholders and key players, indicating a positive momentum towards enhancing the hydrogen value chain in Europe.
