The Kassø e-methanol facility in Aabenraa, Denmark, has been officially inaugurated, heralding a new era in sustainable industrial practices. Developed by European Energy in collaboration with Mitsui & Co., the plant is owned by Solar Park Kassø ApS and operated under Kassø MidCo ApS. With a 51% stake held by European Energy A/S and 49% by Mitsui, the facility has a remarkable annual production capacity of 42,000 tonnes of e-methanol, driven entirely by renewable energy sources. The plant is situated near the largest solar park in Northern Europe, integrating renewable power generation with carbon capture and utilization. By using biogenic CO₂ and green hydrogen on-site, the facility produces e-methanol with a significantly reduced carbon footprint compared to traditional methanol. The Kassø facility's accomplishment lies in its support for sectors challenging to electrify directly by offering e-methanol as a decarbonization solution. Industry giants like A.P. Moller – Maersk, the LEGO Group, and Novo Nordisk are already benefiting from this sustainable product. For instance, Maersk will use e-methanol to fuel container vessels, while the LEGO Group and Novo Nordisk are utilizing it in manufacturing processes to replace fossil methanol. The collaboration between European Energy and Mitsui aims to accelerate the adoption of low-emission alternatives in various sectors globally. The facility's opening signifies a significant leap towards integrating renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions in industrial operations. With key industry players embracing e-methanol, this project sets a positive precedent for sustainable practices and environmental responsibility across different sectors.
