India-EU Collaborate on Marine Pollution and Green Hydrogen Innovation
Key Ideas
  • India and the European Union launched initiatives under the India-EU Trade and Technology Council focusing on marine plastic litter and waste-to-green-hydrogen solutions.
  • With a joint investment of Rs 391 crore, the initiatives aim to address shared environmental challenges by harnessing the strengths of Indian and European researchers.
  • The collaborations aim to drive innovation, circular economy, and energy efficiency, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future for both the EU and India.
  • The initiatives will develop advanced tools and strategies to protect marine ecosystems from pollution and accelerate the development of sustainable hydrogen production methods.
India and the European Union have jointly launched two major research and innovation initiatives under the India-EU Trade and Technology Council. With a focus on marine plastic litter and waste-to-green-hydrogen solutions, the initiatives aim to address shared environmental challenges. The collaborative efforts, with a joint investment of Rs 391 crore, involve coordinated calls in the areas of Marine Plastic Litter (MPL) and Waste to Green Hydrogen (W2GH), co-funded by Horizon Europe and the Indian government. Professor Ajay Kumar Sood emphasized the importance of collaborative research in innovation to tackle environmental challenges. The EU Ambassador to India, Herve Delphin, highlighted the dynamism of the EU-India partnership in driving innovation, circular economy, and energy efficiency through concrete actions like marine pollution and sustainable energy solutions. This collaboration aims to benefit both regions economically and environmentally. Marine pollution remains a global concern threatening biodiversity and human health, while the development of waste-to-green hydrogen technologies addresses the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions. The initiative received positive feedback from officials like Dr M. Ravichandran and Santosh Kumar Sarangi, who emphasized the collective action required to protect marine ecosystems and accelerate sustainable hydrogen production methods.
