JCB has reached a significant milestone in the development of hydrogen engines by obtaining full European homologation for its hydrogen engine designed for non-road mobile machinery. The approval, granted in compliance with EU Regulation 2016/1628, certifies JCB's hydrogen combustion engine to current Stage V emissions standards across all 27 member states. Lord Bamford, Chairman of JCB, expressed enthusiasm for the potential of hydrogen as a CO2 emission-free fuel, emphasizing the promising future of combustion engines when powered by hydrogen. This achievement follows intensive research and a £100 million investment, with a team of 150 engineers dedicating almost four years to the development. The company has already produced 130 evaluation motors, which are now being tested on backhoe loaders, telescopic handlers, and generator sets under real-life conditions. With pre-launch tests ongoing, JCB is now gearing up to introduce its hydrogen technology to the market. Lord Bamford highlighted the eagerness of JCB's customers for the deployment of hydrogen-powered equipment, noting that the wait for this innovative technology will soon be over. The focus now shifts towards commercializing the hydrogen engine technology and meeting the demand for sustainable solutions in various industries.
