Hydrogen-powered vehicles are emerging as a promising solution for India's transportation sector as the country tackles severe pollution levels and seeks energy security. Hydrogen, known for being a clean energy carrier, presents opportunities for India to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on imported oil. The National Hydrogen Mission launched in 2021 aims to position India as a global leader in hydrogen production. One of the significant advantages of hydrogen-powered vehicles is their environmental benefits, offering zero emissions and aiding in improving air quality, especially in congested urban areas. These vehicles, particularly fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs), are ideal for heavy-duty applications due to their extended driving ranges and quick refueling times. Moreover, hydrogen can bridge the gap between renewable energy generation and transportation by serving as a storage medium, thereby enhancing grid stability. This storage capability allows excess renewable energy to be used later for powering vehicles, contributing to energy availability. While the potential for hydrogen is promising, challenges such as high costs, infrastructure development, hydrogen production efficiency, and safety concerns need to be addressed. The high initial costs of hydrogen vehicles and infrastructure, along with the lack of a robust refueling network, pose obstacles to widespread adoption. Additionally, ensuring environmentally friendly hydrogen production and addressing safety issues are crucial steps for the successful integration of hydrogen into India's transportation ecosystem.
