EET Fuels Commission UK's First Hydrogen-Ready Furnace at Stanlow Refinery
Key Ideas
  • The new hydrogen-ready furnace at Stanlow will reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 16,600 tonnes per year using refinery off gas, aiming to eliminate 95% of carbon emissions by 2030.
  • Full fuel switching to low-carbon hydrogen in 2028 is projected to save around 200,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, contributing to EET Fuels' decarbonization strategy.
  • The furnace's operation on 100% hydrogen from 2028 will significantly enhance energy efficiency, reduce NOX emissions, and replace three existing furnaces, part of a $1.2bn investment to decarbonize operations.
  • EET Fuels' commitment to becoming the UK's first low-carbon refinery involves investing in energy efficiency, carbon capture, and fuel switching, aiming for a 95% cut in emissions by 2030.
EET Fuels, a subsidiary of Essar Oil (UK) Ltd, has completed the installation of the UK's first hydrogen-ready furnace at its Stanlow site in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. The new furnace, operational since August 2022, is designed to run on 100% refinery off gas, a blend of ROG and hydrogen, or 100% hydrogen. By 2028, it will transition to using 100% low-carbon hydrogen from EET Hydrogen's HPP1 plant. This transition is part of EET Fuels' ambition to eliminate 95% of its carbon emissions by 2030, contributing to a reduction of around 2 million tons of CO2 annually. The furnace's efficiency will lead to a significant decrease in CO2 emissions, improving air quality and energy efficiency at the Stanlow refinery. EET Fuels plans to invest $1.2bn over the next five years to decarbonize operations, including industrial carbon capture and fuel switching. The company's efforts align with the HyNet decarbonization cluster and aim to reduce the North West's overall carbon emissions by 12.5%.
