Himachal Pradesh's Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu visited the Shongtong-Karcham hydroelectric project in Kinnaur to oversee developmental works, ensuring its completion by November 2026. The 450 MW capacity project is expected to bring in an annual revenue of about Rs 1,000 crore for the state. Sukhu emphasized the government's commitment to speeding up the project's construction, which had been ongoing for 13 years, and mentioned plans to enhance the utilization of river water resources to bolster the state's economy. The government aims to take control of other hydropower projects like Dhaulasidh, Luhri, and Sunni, evaluating the expenditure incurred on them. Additionally, there are initiatives to establish a geo-thermal power project in Tapri and delve into solar and green hydrogen energy production. Sukhu highlighted the state's surplus energy status but noted the purchase of electricity during winter months at higher rates, prompting the promotion of solar energy to reduce these costs. Various solar projects totaling 626 MW capacity are being developed through HPPCL to achieve energy self-sufficiency.
