India has unveiled a green hydrogen certification scheme to bolster transparency and credibility in the production of green hydrogen, in line with its goals for clean fuel sustainability. The initiative, launched by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, establishes a structured framework for certifying green hydrogen and its derivatives, positioning India to fulfill both local and global demands for eco-friendly fuel sources. The scheme's current scope encompasses companies that have secured government incentives for green hydrogen projects, excluding exporters who have not availed such benefits. However, there is potential for a phased approach that could incorporate a broader range of stakeholders in the future. An essential aspect of the certification process is the materiality threshold, which mandates the consideration of emission sources contributing at least one percent of the total emission threshold. This adherence to India's green hydrogen guidelines strengthens the scheme's credibility by ensuring all significant emission factors are accounted for during certification. Furthermore, producers are granted flexibility in sourcing renewable electricity for hydrogen production, whether from dedicated or common transmission lines, accommodating varying infrastructural requirements across different regions. This initiative aligns with India's overarching National Green Hydrogen Mission, designed to position the country as a leading hub for green hydrogen production, utilization, and export. Key sectors like fertilisers, refining, steel, and transport are expected to be early adopters of green hydrogen, with the certification scheme playing a crucial role in expediting decarbonisation efforts within these industries.
