India has set a bold near-term milestone of achieving 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of green hydrogen production capacity by 2030. A new report stresses the importance of unlocking green hydrogen demand at scale to realize this vision, highlighting potential export opportunities that may generate up to 1.1 MMT in green hydrogen demand. The joint report by Bain & Company, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) outlines a pathway to stimulate large-scale demand for green hydrogen through policy interventions, strategic sector selection, and export alignment. Blending green hydrogen into current industrial processes like oil refining, fertilizer production, and piped natural gas distribution could create significant demand by 2030. Additionally, exports of green hydrogen, ammonia, and green steel hold promise in contributing to demand. Leveraging public procurement and tapping into global markets are seen as key strategies to drive demand. Industry leaders have welcomed the report, emphasizing the need for long-term agreements, low-cost finance, and input cost optimization to facilitate widespread adoption. The focus remains on balancing supply expansion with demand-side interventions to achieve India's ambitious green hydrogen targets.
