India has embarked on a significant digital initiative with the launch of SAGAR SETU, a platform aimed at revolutionizing the country's maritime logistics sector. The platform, inaugurated on June 26, 2025, by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, connects over 80 ports and 40 key stakeholders to facilitate paperless, efficient, and smart port operations. Designed under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, SAGAR SETU serves as a centralized interface to streamline EXIM-related services. It aims to simplify cargo handling, reduce vessel turnaround times, and create a seamless logistics ecosystem along India's coastlines. The initiative also includes the establishment of a Digital Centre of Excellence through a strategic agreement between the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC). This center will act as a tech innovation lab, integrating AI, IoT, and blockchain solutions to modernize maritime infrastructure. In addition to digital transformation, India is focusing on green hydrogen production at ports with the 'Gateway to Green' initiative. The strategy, supported by the Indian Ports Association, aims to transition leading ports into green energy centers to support Prime Minister Modi's target of producing 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030. Overall, these initiatives align with India's goal of sustainable infrastructure development, energy security enhancement, and global competitiveness in the maritime sector.
