Jindal Steel Duqm, a subsidiary of the Naveen Jindal Group, is gearing up to operationalize a massive 5 MTPA green steel facility in the Special Economic Zone of Duqm, Oman, by 2028. With an impressive investment of around USD 3 billion, this project is slated to be a frontrunner in embracing hydrogen technology for steel production. The facility, developed in two phases, will include two Direct Reduced Iron modules and is strategically designed to be hydrogen-ready, with plans for a transition to green hydrogen as the infrastructure develops. By 2035, the plant aims to integrate 10–15% hydrogen into its processes. The green hydrogen required for this transition will be sourced from various renewable energy and hydrogen ventures in Duqm, ensuring a sustainable local supply. Initially focusing on producing low-emission Hot Briquetted Iron and DRI, the plant aims to cater to global demand, especially from eco-conscious European steel manufacturers. This initiative is a result of a collaboration between the Naveen Jindal Group and the Omani Government, which includes provisions for land allocation. The project signifies a significant step towards cleaner and more flexible steel production methods, aligning with global sustainability goals and fostering economic growth in the region.
