The project, awarded the Gold Award at the ET Global awards for Sustainable Innovation, focuses on microbial electrolysis of produced water to generate Green Hydrogen. This initiative, led by ONGC JV & BD, represents a significant step in India's energy transition, leveraging advanced technology and circular economy principles. The demonstration plant at ONGC's Mehsana Asset uses produced water as a feedstock, eliminating the need for freshwater and operating on less than 1 kWh of energy per kg of hydrogen, powered by solar energy. The Green Hydrogen is produced at a cost-effective rate of around 2 USD per kg and also aids in treating effluent water by reducing Total Dissolved Solids, Chemical Oxygen Demand, and oil content. Digitally integrated with ONGC's OB Nautilus platform, the system allows for remote real-time monitoring, ensuring scalability and aligning with India's commitment to UN Sustainable Development Goals.
