Sembcorp, a leading energy and urban development player, is set to establish a joint venture with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) in India. This partnership, Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India Private Limited, aims to spearhead renewable energy and green hydrogen projects across the country. The collaboration, announced in a statement, will concentrate on the production, operation, and sale of renewable energy and green hydrogen, including derivatives like green ammonia production and bunkering. Vipul Tuli, CEO of Renewables and Hydrogen Business at Sembcorp, highlighted the synergy between Sembcorp's renewables experience and BPCL's petroleum sector expertise to drive decarbonisation efforts in challenging sectors. The joint venture will explore the potential of green hydrogen and ammonia as vital decarbonisation pathways, benefiting from Sembcorp's 6 GW of renewable energy assets in India. While the JV agreement will not significantly impact Sembcorp's financials in the near term, both companies are optimistic about the long-term sustainability impact. G Krishnakumar, the chairman and managing director of BPCL, emphasized the strategic importance of the collaboration in achieving India's climate goals and BPCL's ambition of reaching net zero emissions by 2040. BPCL has set a target of 10 GW in renewable energy capacity to transition into a net zero energy company.
