V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port in Tuticorin, India, is undergoing a transformation to become a smart, green, and secured port with the implementation of AI and IoT technologies. Despite capacity constraints, the port showed robust performance in FY 2024-25, handling 41.72 million tonnes of cargo and achieving a net surplus after tax of Rs 534.90 crore. Infrastructure developments include enhancing container handling capacity, operationalizing new cargo berths, and upgrading the turning circle and entrance channel to accommodate larger vessels. The port is strategically located and well-connected, aiming to handle 50 million tonnes of cargo in FY 2025-26. Additionally, plans are underway for the construction of new berths and terminals to boost offshore wind exports and attract mainline vessels. VOC Port is also earmarking land for port-based industries, including green hydrogen manufacturing and renewable energy projects, with leading global firms committing significant investments. These initiatives align with the port's vision to become a transshipment hub and promote port-led industrialization. To enhance efficiency and security, VOC Port is implementing advanced technologies such as a Vessel Traffic System, RFID gate management, and a Direct Port Entry facility. These solutions optimize vessel movements, streamline cargo handling, and improve evacuation efficiency. The port's focus on green initiatives, technological innovation, and infrastructure development is set to propel economic growth and sustainability in the region.
