Oman is advancing towards a green hydrogen economy by considering the repurposing of its natural gas pipeline network to transport hydrogen. Collaborative efforts led by Oman LNG, GUtech, and EJAAD aim to support the country's green hydrogen goals and achieve Net Zero targets by 2050. The research project evaluates the feasibility of converting existing gas pipelines for hydrogen transport, emphasizing the strategic advantage and cost-effectiveness of utilizing the current infrastructure. With plans to produce 8.5 million tonnes of hydrogen annually by 2050, including both export and domestic use, the study underscores the significance of developing pipeline infrastructure in key production hubs like Duqm and Dhofar. The partnership between industry and academia, facilitated by EJAAD, showcases the importance of public-private collaborations in driving Oman's energy transition and economic diversification. Lead researcher Prof. Najah Al Mhanna highlights the technical complexity of retrofitting pipelines for hydrogen blends and the need for detailed analysis to ensure operational efficiency.
