  • India aims to achieve energy independence by 2047 and Net Zero emissions by 2070, with a focus on becoming a global leader in green hydrogen.
  • The National Green Hydrogen Mission, with an initial allocation of USD 2.4 billion, targets 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen production by 2030, attracting significant investments and creating over 600,000 jobs.
  • India has allocated production and manufacturing capacities to companies, exempted Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia plants from Environmental Clearance, and identified ports to be developed as Green Hydrogen hubs.
The Secretary of Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Government of India, Shri Santosh Kumar Sarangi, presented India's ambitious vision for renewable energy and green hydrogen at the World Hydrogen Summit 2025 in Rotterdam. India's goal is to leverage green hydrogen to become a global leader in the sector, given the country's strength in renewable energy with over 223 GW installed capacity. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in 2023, aims to drive India towards energy independence by 2047 and Net Zero emissions by 2070, with a focus on generating 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030. The Mission, supported by an initial USD 2.4 billion allocation, focuses on creating demand, providing production incentives, and attracting investments to achieve these targets and mitigate CO2 emissions. India has made significant progress in green hydrogen development, with allocated production and manufacturing capacities, policy provisions, and exemptions to support the growing industry. Despite the progress, challenges such as high production costs and infrastructure limitations remain. The Secretary invited delegates to explore partnerships with Indian industries at the summit. India's vision includes not only meeting domestic demand but also becoming a major global exporter of green hydrogen by 2030, contributing to global decarbonization efforts. The National Green Hydrogen Mission is a flagship initiative fostering the adoption of green hydrogen technologies in India, with a target of 5 million tonnes of annual production capacity by 2030. India has awarded tenders to support green hydrogen production and electrolyser manufacturing to enhance its green hydrogen production capabilities.
