Edmonton International Airport (YEG) has announced its partnership with the H2CanFly/H2CanadaEnvol consortium at the Paris Air Show, marking a significant step in advancing hydrogen and sustainable aviation technologies. As Canada's largest airport by land size, YEG is home to the country's first airport-based hydrogen hub and is situated in one of the world's largest hydrogen production regions, Edmonton, Alberta. The collaboration with H2CanFly aims to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen-powered aircraft and support infrastructure development, aligning with Canada's decarbonization journey towards achieving net-zero emissions in aviation. By joining this pioneering research and development coalition, YEG will leverage its technical expertise and assets to facilitate the practical demonstration and deployment of hydrogen technologies. H2CanFly, a multi-phase Canadian initiative, focuses on accelerating hydrogen and electrification technologies for aviation, with the goal of reducing emissions and supporting Canada's net-zero objectives. With over 50 partners from the aerospace sector, academia, and government, H2CanFly aims to drive infrastructure development and research collaborations to advance the country's clean energy and hydrogen aviation future. The involvement of YEG in H2CanFly strengthens collaborative efforts in infrastructure development, research, and workforce training. The airport's commitment to transitioning operations to net-zero emissions by 2050 or earlier aligns with the Government of Canada's Net-Zero Challenge. YEG's role on H2CanFly's board of directors further enhances its contributions to sustainable aviation solutions, alongside industry partners like Airbus, CAE, and the National Research Council.
