The European Investment Bank (EIB) and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) have joined forces to enhance sustainable development in Latin America through a recent cooperation agreement. This partnership aims to increase finance and deliver a stronger development impact in the region. The EIB, driven by the EU's Global Gateway strategy, is committed to boosting smart, clean, and secure links in digital, energy, and transport sectors, as well as strengthening health, education, and research systems globally. The cooperation will focus on areas such as renewables, energy efficiency, green hydrogen, critical raw materials, and infrastructure resilience. The EIB has a long-standing commitment in Latin America, with over 17bn euros invested in various operations since 1993, primarily in renewables, water, and sustainable infrastructure. The EIB plans to scale up its commitment for the coming years, with a particular emphasis on green projects. In Chile, EIB has already injected 100mn euros into a US$1bn green hydrogen project spearheaded by the state development agency Corfo. Furthermore, the partnership between EIB and IDB seeks to mobilize private capital, align resources with Latin American priorities, and strengthen collaboration. The goal is to create a more impactful and sustainable development approach in the region, emphasizing the importance of joint financing and system-wide coordination.
