Orica's Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub in Newcastle, Australia, is set to receive up to $432 million in grant funding under the Australian Renewable Energy Agency's Hydrogen Headstart Program. This funding will support the production of renewable hydrogen using a 50-MW electrolyser powered by renewable electricity, with the aim of replacing methane gas in Orica's ammonia production process to reduce carbon emissions. The project is expected to produce 12 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per day, significantly decreasing Orica's daily gas demand and benefitting the environment by the equivalent of removing 26,500 cars from the road annually. This initiative is part of a broader effort to decarbonise core industrial processes, preserve domestic manufacturing, and create new export opportunities, contributing to Australia's decarbonisation plans. Orica's collaboration with ARENA and government agencies is crucial in meeting contractual milestones for the funding release and advancing the decarbonisation of their manufacturing facility, ultimately working towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for the Hunter region.
