A team of researchers from the Institute of Petroleum and Natural Resources (IPR) at PUCRS is embarking on a mission to establish unprecedented competence in Latin America by accrediting a laboratory capable of measuring hydrogen quality according to ISO 14687 criteria. This initiative not only aims to ensure the quality and safety of hydrogen used in various industries but also to enhance the competitiveness of companies entering the low carbon and hydrogen market. The new hydrogen laboratory under construction at IPR is expected to be audited by ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) in 2026, following compliance with the ISO/IEC 17025 standard and an investment of around R$20 million, sponsored by Petronas. The collaboration with ZBT laboratory in Duisburg and the visit to leading European institutes in Germany and London will enable PUCRS researchers to learn best practices, establish technical cooperation, and develop a cutting-edge laboratory. By expanding horizons and investing in technology development, PUCRS is taking significant steps towards advancing the hydrogen production chain and contributing to the energy transition process.
