UK-Germany Hydrogen Corridor: Strengthening Energy Security with Cross-Border Pipeline
Key Ideas
  • Gascade and National Gas to explore building a cross-border hydrogen pipeline between the UK and Germany to leverage renewable resources and increase energy security.
  • The project aims to meet Germany's increasing clean hydrogen demand while diversifying energy imports, especially after Europe's reliance on Russian energy was exposed.
  • Germany's National Hydrogen Strategy outlines plans to achieve net-zero by 2045, with a significant portion of hydrogen demand expected to be met by imports.
  • The UK is working towards expanding its low-carbon hydrogen production capacity to meet the growing European demand for green hydrogen, emphasizing the importance of electrolysis using renewable energy.
German transmission system operator Gascade and the UK’s National Gas have announced their collaboration on the UK-Germany Hydrogen Corridor project. This initiative involves the exploration of building an offshore pipeline connecting the UK's renewable energy potential with Germany's rising demand for clean hydrogen. The project will consist of two offshore pipeline sections, linking from either Teesside or St. Fergus in the UK to Gascade’s pipeline in the North Sea, enabling bi-directional hydrogen transport. The aim is to enhance energy security in Europe, especially for Germany, which has been seeking alternatives to Russian energy since 2022. Germany's National Hydrogen Strategy, initiated in 2020, emphasizes the transition to net-zero by 2045 and the significant role of green hydrogen in decarbonizing various sectors. Germany anticipates importing a substantial portion of its hydrogen demand by 2030, partly in gaseous form via pipelines. The UK, on the other hand, is focusing on expanding its low-carbon hydrogen production capacity to meet European demands, highlighting the importance of green hydrogen production through renewable energy sources.
