India Explores Oil and Gas Resources in Norway with Focus on Blue Hydrogen
Key Ideas
  • Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri discussed India's plans to explore oil and gas in deep waters with Norwegian energy firms during a roundtable in Bergen.
  • The visit included discussions on offshore energy technologies, such as blue hydrogen production, subsea operations, carbon capture, and storage.
  • Puri visited the CCB Energy Blue Hydrogen Plant and the Northern Lights CO2 Terminal, showcasing innovative technologies for sustainable energy production.
  • The collaboration between India and Norway aims to enhance India's energy capabilities by leveraging Norway's expertise in deepwater exploration and renewable technologies.
During an official trip to Norway, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri engaged in discussions with energy firms, including Equinor, on India's plans to explore over 2.5 lakh sq kms in deep-sea exploration. The focus was on developing a technology ecosystem for hydrocarbons exploration, encompassing various aspects of offshore operations. Puri visited the CCB Energy Blue Hydrogen Plant, witnessing the production of blue hydrogen with integrated carbon capture and storage. This plant, a joint initiative with ZEG Power, demonstrates advanced reforming technology for sustainable hydrogen production. Additionally, Puri explored the Northern Lights CO2 Terminal, a significant carbon storage project supported by the Norwegian government and major energy companies. This project aims to store large amounts of carbon dioxide safely and permanently. The visit highlighted the alignment between Norway's expertise in energy technologies like deepwater exploration and carbon capture with India's energy transition goals. The collaboration between the two countries signifies a step towards enhancing India's energy capabilities and sustainability efforts through innovative solutions and international partnerships.
