Nova Sustainable Fuels is progressing with a proposal to build a sustainable aviation fuel plant in Goldboro, N.S., utilizing wind, solar, and hydrogen power. The project aims to produce sustainable aviation fuel as a lower-emission alternative to traditional jet fuel. The plan includes a joint wind and solar farm in St. Mary's and a plant in Goldboro, where wood chips will be used to power hydrogen production, subsequently fueling the production of sustainable aviation fuel.
Michael Galvin, formerly with Simply Blue Group and now with Octopus Energy Generation backing the project, expects to submit for environmental assessment in early September. The initiative, originally with Simply Blue Group, underwent a change in ownership this year. With increasing interest in sustainable aviation fuel in Europe, serious investors are supporting such projects, including Nova Sustainable Fuels.
While the project's completion is estimated to be at least five years away, pending approvals and sufficient capital, the proponents remain optimistic. The proposed cost is in the billions, emphasizing the scale of the infrastructure project. The community of Guysborough County, hungry for economic development, supports the initiative despite previous industrial project setbacks.
Although past ventures like an LNG facility failed in the region, the enthusiasm for new projects remains high. Nova Sustainable Fuels is engaging with the community to secure buy-in, with the local council already endorsing the project. With an anticipated final investment decision in 2027, the operational plant may come to fruition by late 2030 or 2031, aligned with the area's aspirations for economic growth.
