Australia announced a A$432 million investment in a green hydrogen project led by Orica, the world's largest explosives maker, in Sydney. The Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub initiative aims to decarbonise Orica's ammonia and explosives manufacturing operations by switching to green hydrogen. Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen emphasized the project's importance in securing Australia's energy future and meeting net-zero goals. The project suffered setbacks in the past, including the exit of partner Origin Energy, but with government support, Orica aims to bridge the commercial gap and attract new project partners. The first phase of the hub will produce 12 tonnes of green hydrogen per day using renewable energy sources, contributing to emissions reduction in various sectors like mining, agriculture, and manufacturing. Orica's CEO, Sanjeev Gandhi, expressed optimism in supporting decarbonisation goals domestically and internationally while moving towards the next phase of decarbonisation.
