CIF Launches First Industrial Decarbonisation Initiative in Seven Developing Countries
Key Ideas
  • Seven developing countries selected for CIF's industrial decarbonisation initiative to reduce GHG emissions and boost economic competitiveness.
  • Countries to collaborate with development banks and private sector to develop investment plans focusing on green hydrogen and other clean technologies.
  • Program offers highly concessional funding with a minimum allocation to private sector projects and aims at safeguarding workforce and supporting vulnerable communities.
  • Initiative is part of CIF's $9bn Clean Technology Fund, aiming to secure long-term prosperity, create jobs, and produce low-carbon industrial inputs for renewable energy.
Brazil, Egypt, Mexico, Namibia, South Africa, Turkey, and Uzbekistan have been chosen for the Climate Investment Funds’ (CIF) inaugural industrial decarbonisation initiative. This program aims to decrease industrial greenhouse gas emissions in developing nations while enhancing their economic competitiveness. The initiative projects the value of green industrial goods to reach $2 trillion by 2030. The selected countries will collaborate with development banks and private sector partners to create investment plans that will be reviewed by CIF's governing board. Once endorsed, these countries will receive highly concessional funding to scale up clean and circular technologies, such as green hydrogen, waste heat recovery, and low-carbon materials like steel, aluminium, and cement. The program allows for up to 100% of the financing to be allocated to private sector-led projects, with a minimum of 50%. Emphasis is also placed on safeguarding the workforce, reskilling workers, and supporting vulnerable communities to ensure they can benefit from future green job opportunities. This initiative is part of CIF's $9 billion Clean Technology Fund and is essential for securing long-term prosperity, creating jobs, and producing low-carbon industrial inputs critical for expanding renewable energy capacity and driving the global economy forward.
