The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in India, in collaboration with the European Union (EU), has introduced detailed guidelines for a joint call for project proposals as part of the EU-India Trade and Technology Council (TTC). This initiative falls under Working Group 2, dedicated to Green and Clean Technologies, focusing on the conversion of biogenic waste into renewable hydrogen. The aim is to support India's National Green Hydrogen Mission and Europe's sustainability goals.
The call for proposals, titled 'EU-India Cooperation on Waste to Renewable Hydrogen Innovation,' seeks project submissions from consortia comprising at least three entities from both India and the EU. The projects are expected to explore innovative biochemical and thermochemical technologies for producing hydrogen sustainably from various waste sources, excluding non-biogenic organic waste.
MNRE will offer funding of up to ₹90 crore for Indian participants, while Horizon Europe has allocated EUR 10 million for European participants. Successful projects are anticipated to enhance carbon to hydrogen conversion efficiency, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, and conduct a comprehensive lifecycle assessment covering economic, social, and environmental sustainability.
Submission deadlines are set for September 2025, with project durations ranging from 36 to 48 months. Evaluation will be based on excellence, impact, and implementation quality, with successful projects needing to establish a Consortium Agreement. The emphasis lies on genuine cooperation, gender balance, and transparent fund usage to ensure valuable joint efforts and meaningful collaboration.
