Green Ammonia Partnership for Low-Carbon Energy Transition
Key Ideas
  • Envision Energy and Marubeni collaborate to fast-track global transition to low-carbon energy solutions through a green ammonia offtake agreement.
  • The partnership combines Envision Energy's expertise in green hydrogen-ammonia solutions with Marubeni's global network to support large-scale production and supply of green ammonia.
  • The collaboration aims to accelerate Japan's shift to a green economy, drive investment and innovation, and align with sustainability goals.
  • Marubeni also signs an agreement to purchase low-carbon ammonia from ExxonMobil in Texas and aims to establish a global market for low-carbon ammonia.
Chinese company Envision Energy and Japanese conglomerate Marubeni have entered into a green ammonia offtake agreement to advance the global shift towards low-carbon energy solutions. The partnership intends to leverage Envision Energy's experience in integrated green hydrogen-ammonia solutions and Marubeni's global network and energy trade capabilities to facilitate the production, supply, and commercialization of green ammonia on a large scale. This joint effort is also poised to expedite Japan's transition to a green economy, encourage increased investment and innovation in the sector, and help achieve the government's sustainability objectives. Frank Yu, Senior Vice President of Envision Energy, highlighted the pivotal role of hydrogen-ammonia in the evolving energy landscape. He emphasized the collaboration with Marubeni as a means to expedite the adoption of ammonia as a significant energy solution, enabling the world's switch to carbon-neutral fuels. The partnership aims to pave the way for utilizing ammonia in transportation and electricity generation, promoting a cleaner and more sustainable energy ecosystem. In a related development, Marubeni has inked a deal to procure low-carbon ammonia from ExxonMobil's facility in Texas and has agreed to acquire a stake in the project. Yoshiaki Yokota from Marubeni expressed the company's commitment to establishing a global supply chain for low-carbon ammonia, initially targeting the Kobe Power Plant in Japan. The collaboration with ExxonMobil is envisioned to extend beyond mere supply chain operations to the creation of a worldwide market for low-carbon ammonia. Marubeni plans to leverage this experience to strategically decarbonize its power projects in Japan and Southeast Asia in the near future.
