In a statement to Newsweek, Indian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, highlighted India's readiness to enhance energy imports from the United States to address the country's surging demand, citing reasons such as pricing and availability. He mentioned that India has already increased its annual imports from the US to a range between USD 15 billion and USD 20 billion, with potential for further expansion as global oil supplies increase. India's energy requirements amount to USD 150 billion annually, propelled by its rapid economic advancement. The Minister also mentioned the diversification of energy import sources from 27 to 40 countries, focusing on strategic decisions aligned with national interests. Notably, India has reduced its reliance on Russian oil, which previously accounted for 40% of imports in May 2024, showcasing the country's diversified energy strategy. Minister Puri underscored India's alignment with the Paris Agreement, highlighting achievements such as biofuel blending reaching 20% and the promotion of green hydrogen programs. Additionally, he shared positive prospects regarding oil exploration, with 200,000 square kilometers opened for this purpose in the Andaman Sea. The Minister's remarks also emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership in maintaining stable domestic fuel prices, showcasing the country's independent energy policy and commitment to sustainable practices.
