Kerala is on the brink of a significant advancement in clean energy with the upcoming commissioning of South India's first green hydrogen plant and refuelling station near Kochi airport. This pioneering project, a joint effort between Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL), involves the establishment of a ₹25-crore, 1,000-kilowatt green hydrogen plant inside the airport premises. BPCL will handle the construction and operation of the plant, while CIAL will provide essential resources like land, water, and renewable energy for the plant's operation. The green hydrogen plant will have the capacity to produce 200 kg of green hydrogen daily using four electrolysers, with an initial focus on powering airport vehicles. Once more hydrogen-powered vehicles are introduced in the state, the plant aims to sell hydrogen commercially to the public. The project, originally set for inauguration on May 2, is now scheduled for mid-May due to ongoing work. In addition to the green hydrogen plant, plans are in place for another hydrogen refuelling station in Thiruvananthapuram, showcasing Kerala's commitment to clean energy and sustainable transport solutions. These initiatives are aligned with the National Green Hydrogen Mission and are expected to play a crucial role in promoting the use of hydrogen for transport, fostering emission-free mobility, and driving innovation in the sector. The green hydrogen stations in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram are integral parts of Kerala's Hydrogen Valley Program, aimed at encouraging the widespread adoption of hydrogen-powered transportation and supporting pilot projects between the two cities. These initiatives signify a progressive shift towards sustainable energy systems and underline Kerala's position as a frontrunner in embracing clean and innovative technologies for a greener future.
