Tree Energy Solutions (TES) and CPC Finland have come together to establish a joint venture named Luoto Energia with the aim of developing a significant synthetic LNG project at the Finnish Port of Rauma. The project focuses on producing e-LNG, a cleaner alternative to traditional LNG, by combining green hydrogen with biogenic CO2. This process results in a product that is chemically identical to fossil LNG but boasts significantly lower lifecycle emissions. The facility is planned to incorporate an electrolyser capacity of up to 500 MW, enabling the production of approximately 60,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, which can then be converted into over 125,000 tonnes of e-LNG. By 2026, Luoto Energia intends to enter the pre-FEED phase, with a final investment decision (FID) slated for 2028. Marco Alverà, the Co-founder and CEO of TES, highlighted the versatility of e-LNG as a drop-in fuel that can aid in decarbonizing various sectors, including steel, shipping, and heavy transport. This initiative underscores a shift towards sustainable energy solutions and aligns with the tightening regulations pushing for cleaner alternatives in industries such as shipping.
