NEOM's Green Hydrogen Project Progresses with 4 GW Solar and Wind Generation
Key Ideas
  • NEOM's green hydrogen project is on track with 4 GW of solar and wind power to be completed by mid-2026.
  • Construction work, including key equipment installation like electrolysers and wind turbines, is at 80% completion.
  • NGHC's world-scale plant aims to produce up to 600 tonnes per day of carbon-free hydrogen in the form of green ammonia by 2026.
  • A $8.4 billion financial close and a 30-year off-take agreement with Air Products demonstrate strong support for the project.
NEOM's Green Hydrogen Project, led by NEOM Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC), is making significant progress. The project includes the integration of 4 gigawatts (GW) of solar and wind energy to produce up to 600 tonnes per day of carbon-free hydrogen by 2026. As per a construction update, 80% of the construction work has been completed, covering various sites like the green hydrogen facility, wind garden, solar farm, and transmission grid. Milestone equipment such as wind turbines, hydrogen storage vessels, electrolysers, the cold box, and pipe rack are being installed. The project is a joint venture between ACWA Power, Air Products, and NEOM. The financial close of $8.4 billion and a 30-year off-take agreement with Air Products signify strong financial backing for the project. The progress indicates a positive sentiment towards hydrogen as a clean energy solution in the region.
